<<We are by virtue of planetary rotation inverted much of the time though it usually escapes notice. Multiple and infernal events have for all of us newly unlatched an off-kilter portal to outface glaringly insufficient interiority. Entering the recursive fractal is fraught yet completely familiar. It’s awestruck comfort in luxuriant disorientation, a shared thousand-yard stare with the potentiality of infinite insights, a chance to grow beyond rote readings of situations which are anything but. Clarinetist and composer Federico Calcagno has translated this Mundus Inversus into involving, evolving agglomerations of divergent perspective with Nabou Claerhout’s trombone, José Soares’ alto sax, Pau Sola Masafrets’ cello, Aleksander Sever’s vibraphone, Adrian Moncada’s piano, Pedro Ivo Ferreira’s bass and Nick Thessalonikefs’ drums, all luminously singular hierophants from the Netherlands scene. The musicians function as a tight unit grounding the themes in ensemble cohesion while individually stretching their wings in unforeseen places and ways. Moving seamlessly between numinous radio serial foley, mathematical challenge, plush nestle and chamber innovation rechannels notions of tussle amidst conflicting vantages into a shared camera obscura of coalescence. The sounds are constantly moving with the listener receiving continually refreshed reassurance. This album is a geste with ancient impressions upended, the extant turned about.>>

A very interesting album. At a few places I keep asking myself: Was this composed by Arnold Schönberg (or his disciples)? Anyway, I'm all for skilled musicians exploring the boundary (if one exists) between jazz and classical. Thumbs up! jyrki63

This is one of the 2 or 3 albums of 2023 for me. The skill of the compositions is matched by the fine musicianship all around.
Kate blends ideas from contemporary classical music with improvisation with great skill.
